About the event

This July, Shakespeare South will travel to Verona, Italy, with Il Vento!

This powerful new ecological reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Tempest has been commissioned by both the International Shakespeare Association and the Conservatorio di Verona for presentation at the Conservatorio during the 2026 World Shakespeare Congress.

Created by South Australian theatre-maker Dr Alys Daroy (author Shakespeare, Ecology and Adaptation with Paul Prescott for Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare, 2025), Il Vento brings together an extraordinary Australian team of artists including Michaela Burger (State Opera South Australia, State Theatre Company South Australia), Melanie Munt (Black Swan State Theatre Company, Ladies in Black), Paul Westbrook (ROUGE, OzAct), and Alys Daroy (Cambridge Shakespeare, Shakespeare’s Globe), alongside original music composed and performed by Michaela Burger in collaboration with Maestro Federico Zandonà and the Conservatorio di Verona.

For a small independent company founded in South Australia, this invitation is deeply moving. To make this extraordinary journey possible,…
