We make Shakespeare and new works for a changing world.
Shakespeare South Studio brings together performance, production and experimental ecotheatrical research. Founded on Kaurna Country, South Australia, in 2021, we are Australia’s first dedicated Shakespearean ecotheatre company and now work internationally with artists and researchers across Australia, the UK and beyond.
We create experimental new works exploring how performance can increase awareness of environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity extinction and environmental justice.
We also make lively, accessible Shakespeare, performed outdoors in living landscapes and inside traditional and unconventional spaces.
Our work is developed carefully and iteratively through both Shakespearean original practices and exploratory adaptation with new works and new interpretations of classic texts.
Research and artistic practice continually inform one another. We create original music and explore creative sound, scenography, and movement in a creative laboratory environment through collaborative rehearsal and public performance.
Partnerships include the Conservatorio di Verona in Italy, the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium of South Australia and Carrick Hill House and Garden in Adelaide. Our work featured at the 2026 World Shakespeare Congress, Planetary Shakespeares, in Verona and has been recognised in Australia’s Culture for Climate report for ecological theatre practice.
Our multi award winning Australian and UK based team includes Founder and Artistic Director Alys Daroy, Musical Director Michaela Burger, Movement Director Paul Westbrook and company actors Melanie Munt and Aurora Kurth, alongside a wider network of artists, composers, designers and researchers.
