Anthropoiesis

Location

European Cultural Centre, Palazzo Bembo, Venice Biennale Architettura

Date

2023

Anthropoiesis is a soundscape and visual poetry installation presented in Venice during Biennale Architettura 2023.

Combining spoken word, music, location recordings and sonification, the work invites audiences to reconsider relations between time, space and existence in the Anthropocene. It asks what it means to inhabit deep time when humans have become a geological force, and how new forms of making, kinship and beauty might emerge amid biodiversity loss and climate change.

An assemblage of environmental and human made “sound debris” recorded across Western and Central Australia and beyond moves between granular and expansive scales of more than human existence. These layered soundscapes are interwoven with original writing and text adapted from David Farrier’s Anthropocene Poetics to create a meditation on geological time, ecological loss and possible futures.
